Our Vegetable Garden Oasis

The 2021 project that added instant charm to our backyard!

What started as just two simple vegetable boxes on our lawn has grown into one of my favourite spaces in our backyard… a little garden oasis that feels charming, cozy and full of life.

From the beginning I knew I wanted to expand beyond just raised beds and create something more intentional. We surrounded the garden with boxwoods and Little Lime hydrangeas. A variety I love because it’s a bit smaller than the traditional limelight and thrives in full sun. And since our backyard is a true sun magnet it couldn’t have been a better fit.

We also added peastone to give the space texture and an organic feel while making it easy to walk through and enjoy. To make it all possible we rented a small excavator for the digging, a lifesaver compared to spending months tackling the lawn by hand. Beneath the peastone we laid landscaping fabric to keep things low-maintenance and tidy.

One of my favourite details is the open area off the walkway which can be styled with a dining table for summer meals or a cozy firepit for evenings outdoors. It makes the garden not only functional but also a gathering space adding another layer of charm and purpose to our backyard.

This new garden feels so much more established now and I love the way it has transformed our yard into a space that blends beauty, function and a little everyday magic. It’s become our own backyard retreat — and of course the fresh vegetables are just the cherry on top!
