Our Backyard Oasis: The Inspiration

Our Backyard Transformation: Creating a European Countryside–Inspired Escape

When we first chose this lot, we knew the backyard had something special. It was the all-day sun and the wide open space that instantly made us see the potential. Even before the house was finished, we could already picture what this space might become.

Bringing the Vision to Life

One of the most exciting parts of this process has been seeing our ideas take shape through thoughtful design and planning. We partnered with Imagine to help turn our inspiration into a clear, cohesive vision for the backyard.

Their design helped us see how all the pieces—from the stonework to the planting and gathering spaces that could flow together in a way that feels both beautiful and functional.

From there, Conestoga Contracting & Pools will be bringing the project to life. They’re leading the landscaping and installing the pool, helping transform what is currently a wide open yard into the layered, European countryside–inspired escape we’ve been dreaming of.

We’re also excited to be working with Creative Landscape Depot, who are helping supply many of the natural elements that will bring this space together. From the large natural paver stones that add the base and texture, to the materials that will shape the garden beds, their products will help create the soft, organic foundation we’re envisioning throughout the yard.

It’s always amazing to watch a space evolve. From a simple idea, to a design on paper, and finally into a place where memories will be made.

Now, we’re finally bringing that vision to life.

The Vision: A European Countryside Escape

The overall feeling we’re designing for is inspired by the European countryside—lush, relaxed, and a little whimsical. Think layers of greenery, soft textures, and natural materials that feel as though they’ve always belonged there.

We’re planning a landscape filled with flowering hydrangeas, ornamental grasses, and a privacy hedge, all anchored with large natural stones for texture and scale. The goal is for the space to feel lush, organic, and flowing, with a soft, earthy foundation.

More than anything, we want it to feel peaceful and welcoming—like stepping into a little retreat of our own.

The Backyard Right Now

At the moment, our backyard is still wide open and completely sun-soaked. It’s a blank canvas, but that’s part of what makes it so exciting.

With so much space and endless potential, it feels like the perfect place to create the whimsical, garden-like escape we’ve been dreaming of.

The Planting Plan

Greenery will play a huge role in setting the tone of the space. The landscaping will include a mix of:

• Cedars for privacy

• Boxwoods for structure

• Smoke bush for height and softness

• Whimsical ornamental grasses

• Russian sage and lavender for texture and fragrance

• Flowering vines climbing up the pergola

We’ll also be keeping our vegetable boxes in their current location, which have become such a special part of our backyard routine.

Together, these plants will create layers of greenery that feel natural, lush, and slightly wild in the best way.

Hardscape & Stone

To anchor all of that greenery, we’re adding hardscape that feels clean but still natural.

The patio will feature a traditional stagger pattern using Techo-Bloc Greyed Nickel in Blu Grande, paired with Villagio Stone in Shale Grey to define and highlight the dining area beneath the pergola.

The stone brings texture and structure while still letting the landscaping be the star.

A Cozy Pea Stone Firepit

Our current firepit setup is getting a new home.

We’ll be relocating it to a fresh spot in the yard and surrounding it with pea stone and large natural stones, creating a cozy lounge area. It’s easy to imagine evenings here—gathering around the fire, roasting marshmallows, and staying outside long after the sun sets.

The Pergola

Extending from the pavilion will be a pergola that becomes a natural gathering place.

Covered in climbing vines, it will create a shaded spot for relaxing, sharing meals, and lingering over conversation. The pergola is by Backyard Discovery and will help define the outdoor dining space while keeping the garden feeling open and airy.

Our Backyard Sauna

One feature we’re especially excited about is adding a backyard sauna.

It’s a simple way to bring a little spa-like wellness right into our everyday life. A place to relax, recharge, and step away for a few quiet moments—without ever leaving home.

A Wood-Burning Outdoor Fireplace

Inside the pavilion, we’re adding a wood-burning fireplace wrapped in natural stone.

It will bring warmth, texture, and that cozy, rustic charm we love. Whether it’s a cool summer evening or a crisp fall night, it will be the perfect spot to unwind.

The Pool

At the heart of the yard will be a large rectangular Latham Kingston fiberglass pool in Night Sky.

The deep, dark blue color gives the water a rich, reflective look that feels natural and calming. It’s also big enough for everything we want the pool to be used for—pool games, kids jumping in, and long afternoons spent cooling off in the sun.

The Pavilion

The pavilion will be a sunny, welcoming hangout space framed in warm natural timber.

It’s designed as a place to relax, cook, and gather with friends and family. Down the road, we’re planning to add a full outdoor kitchen, making it an even bigger hub for summer hosting.

A Detached Garage with a Purpose

We’re also building a detached garage that will serve more than just storage.

It will hold pool toys, outdoor gear, and lawn equipment, but it will also include a bathroom and change room for guests. Inside, there will be plenty of open space where the kids can hang out and play ping pong.

A Backyard Made for Everyday Moments

More than anything, we’re designing a backyard that feels like a staycation just steps from our back door.

A place for slow summer afternoons, long dinners outside, and evenings spent by the fire. A space that invites us to linger a little longer and soak up the simple moments that make home feel special.

And we can’t wait to watch it all come to life.
